Costa Rica, gear, packing, Travel Musings

I apologize for the sparse updates. Balancing graduate school, 2 jobs and settling in to a brand new city has been thrilling but exhausting, and my focus has been on those things. I have not forgotten about you, though, dear readers!

As you know, I went to Costa Rica! I rocked out on a surfboard, climbed some volcanoes, got myself some sloth besties, swung like Tarzan, and a whole lot more that I haven’t told you about yet.

A beautiful day to inhale noxious fumes! Just kidding. Mostly.

The end product of this–other than the frickin’ awesome time I had–will be a guidebook for solo female travelers to Costa Rica with Go! Girl Guides! If you’re as excited about this as I am, let us know!

Anyway, as a packing aficionado, I was puzzled as to how to start packing for a 7-week trip to the tropics.

Crying in Public and Conquering Fears in Costa Rica, the Tarzan Way*

conquering fear, Costa Rica, travel

When I was nine, I was tall. These days, I’m a whopping 5’4, but back then, I exceeded the national average and was taller than the 50 inches required to ride this:

That’s the Giant Dipper at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, one of the oldest wooden rollercoasters in the country.

My nine-year-old self and adult-self agree that the trauma resulting from this ride explains my subsequent and persistent distaste for free falls. Turbulence on airplanes, rollercoasters, even watching people jump off high rocks into water make me queasy.

Anyway.

Free falls and a plethora of other things grace my list of fears, but one of them is actually not heights. So I was excited to participate in one of the most popular and exciting tourist activities in Costa Rica: ziplining.

See how excited I am? And how small my head looks in that darn helmet? Curse you, tiny head!

Sloths Are Cute (And Also A Little Creepy)

I have a confession to make.

I’ve never been crazy about sloths.

Look at their cuteness. UNREASONABLE.

Look at their cuteness. UNREASONABLE.

They are cute. And slow. And mostly cute because they’re slow. But they’ve just never been on my animal radar. Dolphins were more my speed. And dogs. Dogs are so flippin’ AWESOME! Long story short, it was never a life dream of mine to cuddle with sloths, or watch them lazily reach for a branch or shimmy down a tree with the dexterity and speed of a totally baked person.

Maybe I just hadn’t spent enough time on YouTube.

Costa Rica

With all the shenanigans I’m going to be having in Central America in the coming months, the blog is going to be pretty quiet.

This morning, ready to hit the jungles and beaches of Costa Rica!

If you’re really craving some cool travel stories, I recommend checking out a few of my favorite blogs while I’m on the road (see Link Love).

And don’t forget to follow me @saramelanie14 on Twitter and Instagram for more up-to-date stuff (I’ll be posting there when possible)!

Pura vida!

Announcements, Costa Rica

Sorry I’ve been so absent the past few days.

I’m on the final leg of my huge Eurotrip and am trying to soak up as much Berlin as possible before flying home on Thursday morning (and by home, I mean the great New York City, not my hometown but a place I feel very much at home).

I can’t wait to eat in NYC, and try my luck again at the show lottery (seriously, I’m gonna get those front row seats to Book of Mormon at some point!) and hang out with some of my favorite people!

I'll definitely be going back to Maison Premiere for some oysters and absinthe while in Brooklyn!

So far, I’ve been to a bunch of museums, wandered around Kreuzberg (I even used some Turkish there!), took myself to the movies (saw Django Unchained–nice one, QT, nice one) and have eaten my very first currywurst! (SO. GOOD. More on this later).

Look forward to more posts about Turkey, Slovenia, Germany and more in the coming weeks!

Will be posting soon about the coolest carnival EVER in SLOVENIA!

From NYC I’ll head up to Boston to see some family & friends, as well as do an Irish 5k in Sommerville! Ireland, I’ll never leave you! 😉

Then, I”ll be back in sunny Tucson for about a month before heading out on another GRAND adventure: Costa Rica!

Here’s my big announcement! **cue drum roll**

That’s right, I’ll be going to Costa Rica for about 7 weeks, and will be using that time to write the next Go! Girl Guides guidebook! Stay tuned for my postings from Costa Rica, and be sure to find Go! Girl Guides on Twitter, Facebook or add it to your blogroll. Better yet, buy one of their amazing guidebooks (Mexico, Thailand and Argentina currently available) on Amazon or at Barnes & Noble!

For now, I’ll just say that although I have had the time of my life on my travels so far, I will be really glad to be home for awhile. I’ll let you in on those reasons in the coming months.

Hope everyone’s doing swell, and remember: if you like Bumblings of Miss Button here, don’t forget that I’m also on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram!
